Dos and Don’ts of Flying Internationally With a Vape Pen

If you are planning your trip abroad and you are still in doubt if it is allowed to fly with a vape pen – you came to the right place.

Is vaping allowed at airports? Can I bring a vape on a plane? Can I use it on a plane? Where can I buy vape liquid abroad? If you are asking yourself these questions and all you can find are controversial answers, this article is for you. We will help you with the information about vaping etiquette on the plane, what is allowed and what is forbidden at the airport, and how to behave in certain foreign countries when it comes to vaping.

Do: Put your vape pen in your carry on/hand luggage

E-cigarettes and vape pens are much more convenient than classic cigarettes because they don’t contain tobacco, they are made with nicotine of a higher quality and there is neither smoke nor smell. You can take your vape pen and the refill wherever you go. What is more, vaping is not banned in all enclosed public spaces like regular cigarettes.

On the other hand, there are some regulations and unwritten rules you should follow when bringing a vape on a plane. Can you bring it with you? Yes, but where to pack it? If in doubt, it’s best to put a disposable vape pen in your hand luggage. Some extra refills can be placed in the hold luggage, though.

Don’t: put your vape and electronic devices in checked luggage

The rules are clear: battery-powered e-cigarettes and all sorts of vaporizers, vape pens, and atomizers can only be carried in the aircraft cabin. The above-mentioned applies to all electronic nicotine delivery systems and it means that they are supposed to be put in carry-on baggage or in your pocket.

It is advisable for you to check with your airline for additional restrictions before the flight. Additionally, remove all vaping devices from carry-on bags if checked at the gate.

Do: Store refills in a plastic bag

When packing your refills for traveling with vape, the smartest idea is to pack them in a plastic bag. In this way, the liquid will be safe from leaking despite the changes in air pressure. One quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag is the best choice for storing vape juice on the plane.

Don’t: Put more than 100 ml of e-liquid in your hand luggage

The rules about bringing any kind of liquid on the plane are strict, which is why you should be careful about the amount of liquid you are transporting, be it water, cosmetics, or e-liquid. The limit for hand luggage is 100 ml but despite that rule, you can pack a greater amount of liquid in your checked luggage.

So, yes – you can take the vape juice on the plane but not more than 100 ml in the hand luggage and as much as you want in your checked luggage (if it is properly sealed in zipper storage bags, of course).

Do: take your vape on the plane in a vape case

The best way to pack your vape when flying is to put it in the vape case. Vape liquids, batteries, and accessories will be all in one place, safe and easily accessible.

Don’t: store lithium batteries in your checked luggage

Since lithium batteries are forbidden from being transported in checked-in luggage due to potential fire hazards, you are supposed to take them on board. Because vape pens use lithium-ion batteries that are not allowed in plane cargo space, you are expected to keep your vape pen on the plane with you.

Do: Inform yourself about a particular airline policy

Regardless of the comprehensive information we have given you, still check with your airline company whether they allow vape pens on the plane. Ask about flying with vape cartridges internationally and get insights about possible restrictions.

Don’t: vape on the plane

Vaping on a plane is not just rude and frowned upon but also against the law, and if you get caught – you can be arrested. Besides, it is possible to get a lifetime ban from the airline company. Why are the rules so strict? To ensure the absolute safety of the passengers. And for a good reason, considering that there was once a passenger who caused fire on the plane because his e-cigarette exploded. Now, he is facing some serious legal consequences.

Do: check the regulations of the country you are traveling to

Inform yourself about the vaping bans in the country you are traveling to. Many places that are smoke-free are vape-free as well, which means that e-cigarettes and vape pens are prohibited in many restaurants, bars, and other public spaces.

Don’t: try to buy e-juice and vape in countries like Thailand and Singapore

Vaping in Thailand has been completely banned since 2014. If you get caught – you could end up in jail for up to 10 years. Not only are e-cigarettes illegal, but so are the juice refills. It is illegal to possess, purchase and import vaporizers in Singapore. That also includes buying vape pens online and shipping them to Singapore for personal use.

Brazil, Singapore, India and Uruguay are on the list of countries that have banned vaping and the fines are very high, so it is better not to take that risk. Don’t push your luck by trying to purchase it in the streets or from someone who offers you discreet shipping.

Do: store it in the cool and dark place

It is advisable to keep the vape pane stored upright at all times, otherwise e-liquid could leak. It is also best to keep it in a cold and dark place, like in a drawer or a cupboard in a hotel room where it will not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Don’t: behave disrespectfully in certain indoor spaces

Vaping is allowed in some indoor public places where smoking is not, which is one of the reasons why smokers switch to vaping. However, producing visible clouds could not only trigger people who have quit smoking but also create misperception for children that vaping is smoking.

Furthermore, no matter if it is explicitly banned or not, it’s not okay to vape in some indoor spaces such as temples, churches, galleries, government buildings, theatres etc. Also, avoid vaping around people who are eating.

There are a lot of inaccuracies and misconceptions about e-cigarettes and vaping, especially when it comes to traveling with vapes. We hope that the listed information helped get ready for your trip and that now you know what to expect when flying internationally with a vape pen.
